Welcome to the Bethel School, BELLS, Texas,
August, 2001

Bethel District 48 was built in 1936. It was located south of Hayden Hall
Road in Bells. In 1892, the land for the school and Bethel Baptist Church
was purchased for $14. an acre.
The first Bethel school was east of this school. The Bethel School was a
one room school house, first through eighth grades.
It was named for the Bethel of the Bible where in a dream Jacob had a
vision of angels ascending and descending a ladder to and from heaven.
Trustees were G. W. Andrew, J.W. Hall, Pete Galbreath, York Goodman and
Arthur Galbreath.

A student of the old school, later became the teacher. Lou Vicy Hall
Hayward attended high school at Denison and graduated from Prairie
View College. She taught five years in the old school house and thirteen
years in the new Bethel School.

At the school, there was a water well and an
outhouse. They had a gas heater. An old piano stood in the school
house, along with many old school desks. At the original site, the eight
windows faced the North. There were chaulk boards along back and one side. The
Bethel school was integrated with the Bells Independent School in the
1960's.

August, 2001, the one room Bethel school was relocated to Whitewright's city park.
