Burgess Family Military Records This below is the old copy of the June 2004 list showing our family member soldiers. As I recall, in August 2005 I had 61 of our family's soldiers provided by the family members on the list. These addressee names below are who I sent to in 2004, & since then I added addressees. ============================================= "Norma Carden Reynolds Earl Herrington Patricia (Howell) & Art Kielty & Harlan Howell Billy Howell/Deona/James Howell Carl Cox Buddy Beach Garnet Burgess Adrian Warren/Bobby Jean James Waters Corky Waters Karen Grubbs Beryl Burgess ================================ A. Below is a list of our family's military; soldiers, sailors & airmen that have served our nation, of whom I am aware. This list includes government & contractor civilian employees who served in a capacity to protect our country, including overseas or on our borders against communism, immigration assault, & Islamic-Terro-Fascism. I use "soldier" as the generic meaning of all servicemen (women, sailors, airmen, marines, soldiers). B. I was prompted to start this list when Garnet Burgess (brother) recalled that Otto Burgess had said we had 3 servicemen in WWII & we could only recall two soldiers. Our discussion of remembering our WWII soldiers arose because of the three recently publicized events in June 2004 of: 1. the 60th Anniversary remembrance of the WWII Normandy Landing (Invasion of Europe by "The Allies") on June 6th 1944, 2. President Reagan's funeral & commemoration in the US Capitol & National Cathedral, and his WWII service. 3. the WWII Memorial just completed & opened. On 26 June 2004, Virginia (wife) & I (Fred) visited the new National WWII Memorial on the Washington DC "Mall" between the Vietnam Memorial & the Washington Monument. It is a spectacular monument & deserving tribute to our gallant WWII soldiers. The monument has many small bronze friezes of "America's Greatest Generation" of warriors, family scenes, women at work in the war plants, military ships, armaments, machinery, logistics moving the equipment to the combat zone, battle scenes, war scenes, & a "Gold Star" representation of the more than 400,000 American soldiers that died . The setting represents the two major theaters of WWII, Pacific & Atlantic including a moat of water. It is a wide partially sunken amphitheater like setting of stone, water, monuments, statues & powerful inspiring words of our wartime leaders. Chiseled in granite in one location is a part of FDR's "Day of Infamy" speech: "--- PEARL HARBOR DECEMBER 7, 1941, A DATE WHICH WILL LIVE IN INFAMY... NO MATTER HOW LONG IT MAY TAKE US TO OVERCOME THIS PREMEDITATED INVASION,THE AMERICAN PEOPLE, IN THEIR RIGHTEOUS MIGHT, WILL WIN THROUGH TO ABSOLUTE VICTORY. ---" Unlike some email accounts this part of Roosevelt's speech did not end w/ "---so help us God". He did use those words in this speech but the whole speech is not chiseled on the Memorial, consequently those words are not here. C. Sprinkled thru-out my paper file notes of the family history & genealogy, I had jotted down various accounts uttered by our relatives of family members in military service. Consequently, I started this log below, a few days ago, so eventually as I run across these notes in my paper, electronic & mental files, I thought I'd list & share all of our family's known soldiers of all wars & military service. Of course there are many collateral marriage branches of our family so each of us are not blood related to all the soldiers listed but we are all family & thankful & proud of those who have done their part to protect us all. So far, our family contributed the names of 36 family soldiers/ sailors/ airmen/ marines/ government employees, 8 of whom are WWII veterans. D. If you wish, add missing names & correct the information that other family members have already provided regarding our relatives. Suggest include units/ships served, what wars, what service period, what decorations/awards, rank, wounded (WIA) & KIA, where buried, interesting stories your soldier related by, or about them, etc? If we know the time period our soldier served in their units/ships, we may reconstruct in which battles they participated. Also in the WWII days soldiers went from America to war by troop ships, rarely by plane. If we know the time they went & the ship they were on we may be able to somewhat reconstruct the surrounding events that they may have experienced as to where they went, & the land & sea battles they may have encountered. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WWII: 1. *** Earl Hillis Herrington b. 1924. I assume Earl was in the Pacific in the closing days of WWII. Earl wrote: "I was on the destroyer, USS Myles C. Fox DD829 at the beginning of occupation from Aug. '45 until April of '46. We anchored at night in Tokyo Bay at Yokosuka and patrolled the coasts in the daytime." Earl is son of Alec Herrington (1884). Jim is brother of Billy Burgess, living in Bells, Texas, sisters Virgie in California, Gerthie Burgess Moore in San Benito. Re: The Burgess Family 6. *** Hoy)-James Hoy MORGAN 1913-1967 Hoy was wounded in Europe, Germany I think. What years served, what units, battles, military awards/decorations, rank? Re: Morgan Family, son of Mary LueCressey Burgess Morgan (1880). Nephew of George Burgess (1882). I imperfectly recall all I write here about Hoy's story told at Hoy's sister, Nettie Morgan Ticer's home in Rio Hondo. There were two relatives' (Morgan/Ticer) homes, directly across the road from one another about 2 miles out of Rio Hondo about a ½ mile from Archie Howell's home. I think one home was Russell & Mary LueCressey Burgess Morgan's & the other was Hughey & Nettie Morgan Ticer's. I think Hoy lived in the Morgan home, at least at that time shortly after his return after the war, or across the road at the Ticer home. The Morgan's lived on the north side of the road & the Ticers in the south side home. The story was that Hoy, in a combat attack was fortunately caught in a shallow depression on his back w/ bullets from both sides whizzing just above his belly including a German machine gun. Said he could not move for many hours because when he did move, like to stretch or look, the Germans shot at him until he appeared dead. In this fight he was wounded but it must not have been severe as I have no memory of him being sent home for recuperation. The story was told at the Morgan's home by Hoy. I was about 7 when I 1st heard this described & heard the story a few times over the next 5 years or so, repeated by Hoy & by Otto Burgess. Mary Burgess Morgan (1880) died of skin cancer on her left temple as I recall. My memories in this account of Hoy & Mary Morgan are subject to correction by more accurate memories of the Morgans & Ticers. It is possible Hoy was referring to another soldier but why would that story have been repeated so many times if it was not Hoy? Hoy was born in Fox County, Arkansas. Buried Rio Hondo. 7. *** Delfred Lyold Dick 1922-1995. Served as a doctor in the US Army, on a hospital ship, in the Pacific I think. After the war he was a doctor in Pharr & then in Tyler, Texas. What years served, what ship/s, units, battles, military awards/decorations? Earl, Bobby Jean Howell, if I understood her correctly, said you & your brother, Boyd, were in the military service/ WWII? It appears to me she is in error about Boyd, but what Herrington/relative might she be thinking of? Hill's Corps, Anderson's Division, Wright's Brigade, 22nd Georgia Infantry Regiment, Company C. * Gettysburg: The 22d Georgia Regiment was at Gettysburg as well as several or many other battles in Virginia and Maryland. Indications are John W. Cox participated in the three days of battles at Gettysburg. He was at the Defense of Petersburg for several months where he was wounded (gunshot) in both legs. John was sent home to Georgia, to recuperate nearby at "Cantonment", Georgia. Per oral family history, during his recovery he was called from convalesce to join General Hood’s Army (CSA) to defend at the Battle of Atlanta. Just before Sherman’s Army attacked Atlanta, Sherman was repulsed at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. Kennesaw Mountain is close to John Cox’s home & Cantonment, Georgia, consequently John Cox may likely have also been in the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain. Cox Family. A "Warren Burgess" (1815) served in this war but not proven to be George Burgess' g-father whose name is also Warren Burgess, but it has NOT been proven that he isn't. Received two Texas land bounties one after each Mexican war. Age 31 in 1846. No known record of George Burgess’ g-father, Warren Burgess after 1854, at age 39. Wife Elizabeth (?Mary Elizabeth Green?) married Richard Gray. Elizabeth was called Grandma Gray by her Burgess g-children. What happened to Warren Burgess at age 39? died?, ?moved to Texas?, gold prospecting in California or silver in Nevada? ranoff w/ another woman?. The Warren Burgess that was in both Mexican Wars, received separate land bounties for each war. Strangely Warren's land bounties were in both cases next to a land bounty received by the same woman, probably a wife of a Texas soldier KIA in battle. This story was related by Albert Burgess (1913- 1994) in September 1991 on a trip taken in Beulah's large van, from Texas to Arkansas to visit w/ relatives & see the Thomas Henry Burgess (1847) log home on Blue Mountain, Ark . Albert told this story to Otto, Beulah, Etsel, Garnet & Fred Burgess. Albert said he noticed the coincidence of ‘Land Bounty’ Warren & the woman's name while reviewing court house land bounty records. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Texas Mexican War: 1835 Re: 34. *** Warren Burgess. A "Warren Burgess" (1815) appears to be the same Warren Burgess as in the US Mexican War, served in this Texas Mexican War but not proven to be George Burgess' g-father, but it has NOT been proven that he isn't. Received two Texas land bounties one after each Mexican war. Age 20 in 1835. No known record of our relative, George Burgess’ g-father, Warren Burgess after 1854, at age 39. Wife Elizabeth (?Mary Elizabeth Green?) married Richard Gray. Elizabeth was called Grandma Gray by her Burgess g-children. Be sure to bring the CD to the reunion. ----- Original Message ----- From: FredBurgessAdelphia To: Warren Burgess Sent: Sunday, June 11, 2006 10:24 AM Subject: Re: Our Family Soldiers, Marines, Sailors Hey Warren. I have the Soldiers' File CD, I can see the soldier's file, w/ about 20 more other files. And there are numerous unseen files also because I & a computer repair guy are the ones who copied them from my broken computer last summer, e.g., MS-XP had quit. He said initially he had tried on other computers to copy Outlook Express files & had failed. I said I had but it was agony because I did not know how to do it but had labored & experimented over it for weeks & finally I did it. So from what I could recall from four years earlier, between he knowing more than me, & me having done it once, we did it in about 45 minutes. You have to go to the root of whatever it is called to do it. But since then I have been unable to copy those files back to my operational computer. I'd be glad to send the darn soldiers file thing to you if I could, so you could waste tons of hours too. kidding. I am unable so far to attach any of those files, including soldiers, to send to you. I sent email to those I had sent the soldiers file to, but only Buddy Beach-III has responded. That matches what I learned over the years, no one give a hoot about family tree except you & I among all our relatives, w/ maybe a couple exceptions. E.g., they probably erased the Soldiers' file I sent. I still have a couple of ideas to pursue today on this. I have a version of that soldiers file, probably in my "trash" on an old computer not hooked up. If so I'll have to set it up to recover that file, but it will not be the latest iteration. But I have other alligators to feed first today. Also, their are other relatives I sent that file to, attached to email last year (spring-summer) that I did not send an inquiry to. I sent several & hoped at least one would keep that file & return it, but apparently not. Eventually I'll take this CD & at least one other CD & several floppies from several years ago to see if a computer repair place in Martinsburg, WV can copy those on to my computer & then I'll dispose of what files I don't want & keep some. After I buy a new computer & dispose of the old, I copy my email files from an operational computer onto a floppy, but then generally I could not transfer them. What I did learn later is to drag my e-files from my C-drive file to the hotmail inbox & then on the new computer they show up in the inbox after several minutes & I drag them to my C-drive for filing. That works on operational computers. But I can't drag them from my C-drive to my Adelphia ISP inbox - they won't go. Also if you have different versions of software like attachments involved, they seem to not transfer. Strange, I learned on my outlook express files on my floppies, that I could not recover those except those w/ attachments. Click the attachment & the whole file appears & can be recovered & filed, but not those w/o attachments. Outlook Express is great except for recovering files, for me anyway. If one knows how, anything is easy.
